Everything else is pretty much disregarded.

If you don't want to read all of Knightfall just know this is where Bane 'breaks' Batman. You might see references to these stories but they won't be brought up again in detail. Sword of Azrael, Knightfall, JLA: Tower of Babel, and Hush are all canon but No Man's Land is not (it still has some awesome moments and introduces Cassandra Cain as Batgirl).

If you want to see what happens to Barbara Gordan after The Killing Joke I recommend Batman Chronicles #5 (aka Oracle: Year One) Follow Tim's story in Robin: A Hero Reborn. The Killing Joke is unskippable at this point, so is A Death in the Family and a Lonely Place of Dying which features Jason's end as Robin and Tim Drake's origin story.

Ra's Al Ghul is an especially good villain in this show. Plus it's the show that introduced iconic characters like Harley Quinn. It does a great job showing everyone's characters while keeping you engaged. I really recommend the animated series for introducing you to a bunch of villains without reading 50+ years of comics. Monster Men/Mad Monk are really good too and a nice intro for Batman's solo career but not necessary for the larger story.Īfter Robin/Batgirl: Year One you can read some collected stories, watch Batman: The Animated Series or skip to Nightwing: Year One for Dick Grayson's evolution and Jason Todd's intro. The Man Who Laughs, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Robin/Batgirl: Year One are must-reads. You have a lot of options and characters to choose from.
